LET CORPS KEEP CAMPING FEES LOCAL
I am proud to become a cosponsor of legislation that would let the Army Corps of Engineers keep funds generated locally at that same facility.
With this year's budget cuts forcing campground closures at Corps of Engineers facilities, this proposal would allow funds generated through campground and facility rental to come back to the location where they were generated. This would help busy and popular sites get back the funds they earn.
Illinois’s Carlyle Lake, Rend Lake, and Lake Shelbyville all announced reduced services at various sites beginning later this year due to reduced funding in fiscal year 2008. The legislation would create a "special account" beginning in fiscal year 2009.
The Army Corps of Engineers Recreation Improvement Act (HR 4304) was introduced in December by Congressman John Boozman of Arkansas. It is awaiting action by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Three Members from Illinois sit on this committee, and I will make sure they are aware of this bill and its benefit to their constituents who use these facilities.
